About these projects

Projects that fall under the Future Sustainable Systems banner address areas in current practices that present either health and welfare risks in their own right, or reputation risks which can be partly or wholly addressed through improved health and welfare. The aim is to develop future farming systems which lift the bar on health and welfare and, in doing so, improve the sustainability and reputation of the ruminant sector. These are ad hoc projects, identified on a case-by-case basis. Currently, RH&W is working in two areas: Sustainable dairy bull calves, addressing the challenge of developing viable markets for male dairy-breed calves; and Methane emissions, looking at how the ruminant sectors can play a part in helping the UK achieve its COP26 methane pledge.
